Sleep - How Valuable Is Yours?

One thing all human beings have in common is the need for sleep - and most don't get enough of it.

Not even nearly.

There can be lots of reasons why you might not sleep. Some might sound fairly trivial, such as:-

  • You can't sleep because the room's too hot;

  • You can't sleep because the room's too cold;

  • You can't sleep because the bed's not comfortable; or

  • You can't sleep because there's too much noise outside.
  • Annoying though they are, things like this that spoil your sleep might happen only rarely, or at least they're things that you can fairly easily put right.

    Some things that spoil your sleep patterns, though, are much more serious and hard to deal with, because they're much more personal to you.

    The problem is, they're not external nuisances, like how warm the room is, or whether you'd like an extra duvet on the bed.

    The things that do the most regular, long-term, serious and painful damage to your sleep are those inside your mind.


    What Really Damages Your Sleep?


    Basically, anything you can't switch off from when you want to.


    Typically, you might find that:-

  • You can't sleep for worrying about your finances;

  • You can't sleep for agonizing over your relationship or family;

  • You can't sleep for anxieties about your health, or that of someone close to you; or

  • You can't sleep for thinking of your work.

  • Why Does It Matter If You Don't Sleep Well?


    Because sufficient good and restful sleep is ESSENTIAL to your physical, emotional and mental well-being.

  • Lack of sleep affects your immune system, and makes you more prone to infection and less able to recover from disease;

  • Lack of sleep affects your judgement and your concentration, and causes you to make mistakes at work or when you're driving;

  • Lack of sleep can make you irritable, and causes problems with your partner, friends and family; and

  • Lack of sleep's a cause of mental illness.

    The late comedian and writer Spike Milligan traced the manic-depression, also known as bi-polar disorder, which devastated his life to an incident in World War II, when during the battle for Monte Casino he suffered total sleep depravation for a staggering 15 days and nights.

    He never properly recovered.


  • How Can You Make Sure You Get The Regular And Restful Sleep You Need?

    By getting rid of all the tensions and anxieties that interfere with sleep.

    The quickest, most effective way of doing that is by reprogramming your subconscious, inner mind to get rid of all the worried, anxious feelings that can fill your mind at night, and replace them with more positive and helpful ones.

    It's this subconscious, inner mind that controls things like your breathing and your heartbeat... and when, how restfully, and for how long, you sleep.
